Frequently
Asked Questions & Jewelry Cleaning Philosophies
What
Makes Jewelry Joose So Special?
Jewelry
Joose is a water based, water
soluable, non-toxic, non-flamable and low sudsing solution specifically created to
clean the components found in vintage and antique costume jewelry.
The fact that it will also
thoroughly clean contemporary costume and fine jewelry from any era is
an added bonus - yet it is the principle of this very statement that
sets Jewelry Joose apart from other jewelry cleaning products!
With
claims
to clean costume
jewelry being nothing more than a
marketing
afterthought, the
majority of
jewelry cleaners were originally formulated to clean sturdier
fine jewelry components. The fact of the matter is that not all
fine jewelry cleaners are safe to use on delicate vintage or
contemporary costume jewelry.
When
selecting a
cleaner it is very important
to think about the materials used to manufacture the item you're about
to clean. Not only are vintage costume jewelry components more fragile
than their fine jewelry counterparts but they attract and retain dirt
and grime differently as well. Often more porous and less
permanently
structured than
fine jewelry, vintage costume jewelry is in a league
of its own and is deserving of a cleaning solution that addresses these
differences. Jewelry Joose was created with these facts in mind.
What
Will Jewelry Joose
Clean?
Jewelry
Joose is safe
for all metals
(including
plated base metals, pot metal, aluminum, copper, brass, bronze,
sterling, gold and platinum) as well as most gemstones with a rating of
3 or higher on the Mohs Hardness Scale. With the ability to safely
clean surface
dirt from crystal, glass, gemstones and enamel, as well as remove
verdigris, grime
and corrosion with tremendous
ease, Jewelry
Joose is absolutely different than any other jewelry cleaning product
you've ever
tried.* In addition to its exceptional cleaning abilities,
Jewelry Joose Adornment Cleaner is environmentally friendly and never,
ever tested on animals.
Unlike
other
cleaners on the market,
Jewelry Joose contains
no ammonia, abrasives or use inferior detergents that seemingly foam
forever during the rinsing process. More importantly, Jewelry
Joose is not a
natural citrus based cleaner and contains no d-Limonene.
d-Limonene is
much too strong for
vintage, antique or contemporary costume jewelry!
Full
strength or diluted, this
natural citrus agent is known to
cause deterioration to many
components - especially glues and
plastics. |
Why Is
Jewelry Joose A Spray?
Why
in the world
would you want to contaminate
an entire supply of new cleaner by dipping a piece of dirty jewelry
into it and allowing the sediment to remain behind and polute the
solution?
It's
a fact:
when jewelry cleaner is not cleaning jewelry.....it's cleaning itself!
Once dirt or debris has been deposited into a supply of cleaner, the
cleaner will begin to work overtime - even when you're not using it.
The result?
A weakened solution that won't clean your jewelry as effectively as it
did the first time and will continue to weaken as time passes.
Cleaners that only offer a dipping application, and especially those
that heavily coat and cling, don't and won't clean as well as Jewelry
Joose yet we'll guarantee that you will end up wasting time and using
exccessive amounts of water to rinse unnecessary amounts of cleaner
(not to mention your money) right down the drain.
Each and
every
drop of
Jewelry Joose can do but one thing - clean. Free from residues and
heavy residual fragrance, you'll be amazed at how little solution is
actually needed to thoroughly clean any item. Ounce
per ounce,
and dollar for dollar,
Jewelry Joose cleans more jewelry than its competition
and the reason is three-fold: the spray application, the product's unique
viscocity and its ability to gently, yet
rapidly, dissolve dirt and grime.
How
Do I Use It?
Utilizing a non-aerosol
spray to easily target trouble spots or, with
just a few random spritzes to cover an entire piece of jewelry, you
have provided
enough cleaner to gently dissolve everyday dirt that accumulates from
regular wear or the display of most
jewelry items. For dirtier jewelry a soft brush (such as a baby's
toothbrush) may be used to gently dislodge larger particles and to
access the nooks, crannies and crevices of
more
ornate designs.
May Jewelry Joose Be Used As
A Dip?
Jewelry
Joose
is available in three sizes: a convenient 8 ounce spray and 16 or 32
ounce refills. Dealers and collectors who
purchase or maintain large amounts of jewelry may be tempted to
submerge multiple pieces into a bowl of Jewelry Joose in
an attempt to save time and while there is no real harm in doing this,
no
time is really saved but product will absolutely be lost since the
pieces will be overcoated and the excess solution must be rinsed away. Save time and money by instead
spraying multiple pieces and
then rinse. Even dirtier
pieces that one might be tempted
to soak do just as well with a spray and wait technique. You'll be amazed at the results you achieve not to
mention
how much longer your bottle of Jewelry Joose will last.
Does
Water Ruin
Rhinestones and Other Old Wives Tales
For
years rumors
and scare tactics have run
amok warning
vintage and antique dealers, collectors and wearers to never
get
their rhinestones wet claiming it will ruin the foiling on the back of
the
stone.
This is absolutely not true.
In
fact, it is scientifically
impossible for water to
cause
damage to the metal foiling on the back of stones. Water only has the ability to potentially move already
damaged foil - foil damage that more than likely occured at the factory
during the highly acidic plating process. Homemade
cleaning
remedies such as vinegar, ketchup or salt that contain acids or
have
acid-like like
properties and are not safe to use on vintage or contemporary costume
jewelry, fine jewelry and many softer gemstones.
Why
It's REALLY Important to Clean
Your Jewelry!
Aside
from aesthetics, keeping a piece of jewelry or a fashion accessory
clean is a necessity if you wish to enjoy its beauty for any length of
time. Seemingly safe substances such as hairspray, perfume, lotions and
soap, as well as environmental pollutants including cigarette smoke,
leave their calling card on plated metals and glass baubles to name but
a few components. Over time,
even the oil from your skin builds and eventually leaves behind a
dulling film. Left unattended, these subtances eventually do more than
simply inhibit beauty and, in fact, can initiate the formation of
verdigris as well as other forms of decay and corrosion. Keeping
the surfaces of fashion and fine jewelry clean provides for many years
of enjoyment while simultaneously protecting your investment.
The MOST Important Step
Without
a doubt, thorough drying of all jewelry adornments after cleaning, as
well as keeping moisture away from stored jewelry, is critical to the
preservation of your collection or inventory.
Dampness is a culprit that encourages verdigris, rust, pitting of
plated
metals and other unsightly and damaging conditions. These facts
hold true for practically every jewelry composition including - but not
limited to - man made metals and plastics, natural materials such as
wood, coral, shell and even some natural minerals and stones.
Immediately after cleaning as much water as possible should be absorbed
and wicked away from jewelry but even this amount of drying may not
necessarily be thorough
enough. Jewelry and fashion adornments should be permitted to air dry
for at least a 24 hour period and direct placement in front of a fan
isn't a bad idea if you wish to be absolutely certain that all moisture
has been eradicated from every
possible crack and crevice.
*Care must
always be employed prior to applying any cleaner or liquid to Nacre,
Japanned or Enamelled surfaces. The slightest crack in the finish
of these materials can provide any liquid - even water - the ability to seep
underneath
these coatings and may cause damage or removal.
